| Many
people do not understand the difference between Linux Hosting
and Windows 2003 web hosting which is why we have listed
below the difference between the server platforms.
One question that we are often asked
about linux hosting is that they run Windows XP or Windows
2000 on their computer. Please note it does not make
any difference what operating system you are running
as this is irrelevant in making your web hosting decision.
This means that if you are running
Windows98 or Windows XP on your computer, you can still
choose Linux
Ease
of Use
Many resources and funding have been poored into
both windows 2003 and Linux servers over the years to make
web hosting as easy as possible. Today, there are no real
differences in terms of ease of use between these web hosting
platforms, however you have to remember that Linux have
many more years experience in hosting than windows.
Reliability
The industry consensus is that Linux is more reliable and stable than
windows 2003. Even though our windows 2003 servers are of a high
spec to make them as reliable and as stable as possible Linux servers
still have the edge
Speed
There is no real difference in terms of speed
between the two web hosting platforms. However Linux is
slightly faster processing basic web page data.
Functionality
This is where two platforms differ the most. There
isn’t much that can be achieved in one platform that
can’t be on the other one. The main difference is
how the end is achieved. For example, if you need a database
driven web site, you can choose either PHP/MySQL combination
under Linux or ASP/.NET/MS SQL combination under Windows®2003.
The trend is for solutions to be supported in both platforms.
For example, Microsoft FrontPage, one of the most popular
web site editors out there, is supported on both Linux
and Windows®2003.
Overall Price
Here Linux holds the edge due to the fact that
the most of the software licenses are open source and that
it’s easier to maintain Linux servers than Windows®2003
servers for the same level of reliability and performance.
Unless you specifically plan to use Windows®2003 platform
specific features (see above), it probably makes sense
to choose the Linux platform.
