Hosting Case Study 1

Just Mobile Games develops and sells games for the Pocket PC.  Currently the games are only supplied as downloads and are only available via the Internet.  JustMobileGames at present, have released one game called Curse of the Pharaohs, which was developed by us.  In the future we aim to expand by porting Curse of the Pharaohs to other mobile platforms and by selling games produced by other developers.

Before choosing 1st choice web host it wasn't’t such a problem finding people offering budget hosting in the UK but a problem finding people willing to answer my questions about the services they were offering.

Responses from various web hosting companies tended to be inadequate (i.e. whole questions were unanswered).  The initial response that JustMobileGames received from 1st choice web hosting was encouraging.

We found 1st choice web host by searching Google. . We decided to use them because initial response was encouraging and because they offered telephone support as well as email support rather than some offshore automated call centre (if you are looking for a web host do not underestimate this).

1st choice web host set up a place for our web site, secured two domains for us and helped transfer another from another company based in Denmark.  They also took time to answer numerous questions I had about Internet security.  I was able to successfully integrate a Barclays epdq payment system using the CPanel to set up basic authentification.  I didn’t actually need to contact support once during this after Derek Chambers had given the initial go ahead.  We have found the charges to be very competitive.

We have found the cPanel that 1st Choice offer fine for our needs with plenty of good features and overall are very impressed with the friendly personal service and customer support that 1st Choice offer.

Web Hosting Case Study 2

The Top House is a public house in an area called 'Springhead' which is at the junction of where Oldham meets Saddleworth. Lees is also within 30 seconds walk! It's basically a small area consisting of a small number of what were originally 'villages' which have grown into one large area but still keeping the old names. There is a large concentration of pubs all within walking distance which attracts a lot of weekend trade from people doing 'the tour'. The Top House is one of the two most popular pubs on the tour and was taken over approx 4 years ago by Dion and Madeleine Heap.

Having come from a computing background, Dion quickly saw the potential to be gained by The Top House having a website, he constructed the site approximately 2 1/2 years ago and it has had a major facelift since it's birth. At first, the site was advertised within the pub and local area, however, it wasn't long before the local papers had heard about "Oldham's first interactive pub" which resulted in a full page colour spread. This boosted the site and the pub and since it's birth it has accumulated almost 19000 hits! Not bad for a local pub!

The site is very comprehensive and covers everything from a full rundown of the pubs history, a large photo gallery, live streaming webcam and a very successful forum which is still growing. The need for a change of hosts came along due to The Top House's previous host having problems with the YABB forum that was becoming very popular with the locals and even people from overseas. This included their previous host contacting Dion at 6pm on a Friday night to say they have just suspended the site due to the forum causing problems on their servers and not even offering any support or alternative options to fix the problem. 1stChoiceWebHost took a look at the YABB forum and could see no reason why it would cause problems and has in fact been hosting the YABB forum ever since.

Due to what in effect was an emergency, Dion began trawling the web for hosting companies, basically contacting companies that came up in a google search for "uk hosting company". He then emailed the various companies he found (this went on till the early hours of a Saturday morning) explaining his situation and the bad treatment by his previous hosts, and basically asking if the companies could accommodate his site and forum.

Out of the few that even bothered to reply, the first came from Derek Chambers at 1stChoiceWebHost. He actually got a reply at about 2.00 am which he was very impressed with but also got the answers he was looking for. Being in a service industry, levels of customer service rank very highly with every company he deals with.
